It was commissioned by the de facto first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, inand it is a key building in the history of Palladian architecture in England.

Houghton Hall, Sancton, near Market Weighton, is a Grade I listed Georgian country mansion in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, set in an estate of 7, acres (32 km 2).Located on the estate is the village of Sancton and the vestigial remains of the ancient hamlet of Houghton.
It was built c. –8 by Philip Langdale (d. ) to the designs of Thomas Atkinson and underwent minor. An undated survey of c and Joseph Hill's survey of show that it continued to develop. The rigid formality of avenues and vistas was softened, the straight south drive abandoned and a new, more serpentine, drive created, approaching the Hall through parkland from the south-east.
